Police locked Sao Paolo metro stations and fired tear gas at protesters as a metro-driver strike paralysed the country, sparking hundreds of miles of traffic jams in major cites presently making final preparations for the World Cup. Over the past year hundreds of thousands took part in massive social unrest at corruption and high prices.

Police used water cannons and tear gas on student demonstrators Tuesday in Santiago, Chile, as protesters demanding education reforms clashed with police. Numerous injuries and detentions were reported. Several stray dogs joined the scene, jumping and biting at water from the police cannons.

Organisers say 80,000 protesters involved in the march, which demanded Chilean President Michelle Bachelet reform the country’s education system.
